The assignment was to create an upcycled garment. I had a strip of vintage wool fabric that had been hand pieced into the log cabin pattern. It contained a variety of fabrics, wool, velveteen, cottons, etc. I purchased it from St. Vincent’s for under $5 and mended some seams which were coming apart. I loved the geometric look of this pattern and also the red strips which I wanted to highlight and make the piece look more modern. I was going to incorporate this piece into a garment and then decided to see if I had a ready made garment that I could use this on. I found a black wool jacket a friend had given me and it turned out the strip fit nicely on the right front. I laid the piece on the garment and turned the edges under to fit. Then I hand stitched the piece onto the garment. I had a small piece that I cut out around the armhole and I stitched this piece on the back neckline to continue the pattern onto the back, as Lorraine always suggests.

<span style="font-family: verdana;

I always like to take a sewing project along with me when I travel, something small and portable. This trip I spent some time before I left cutting fabric for beads and fusing interfacing onto the strips. I was inspired by a tutorial I bought from Victoria Gertenbach of the Silly Bodilly blog on her Etsy shop - www.victoriagertenbach.etsy.com

The beads and necklace above are made from silk dupioni fabric. And then it started to mushroom, what can I use for a fabric bead next? These beautiful beads were cut from some fabric I used to make a tunic.

This ring bearer pillow was made for my nephew’s beautiful bride. She picked the dragon fabric and I added a piece of denim on the back as a handle from my nephew’s beloved Grandma’s favorite dress. Using my trusty Bernina I was able to add their names and wedding date. I also made the wired ribbon flowers.

The best part was the handsome ring bearer with his engaging smile!Jane Millerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03995093612763073964noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5890117178662047625.post-87241169676509792542019-04-18T05:40:00.002-07:002019-04-18T05:40:32.377-07:00Tie Necklace

So many beautiful and interesting tie fabrics! I sewed together some lengths of tie fabric and then stitched a tube wide enough to fit these plastic Madrid Gras beads inside. After inserting a bead I tied a knot and just kept going. Large and lightweight jewelry, my motto!

I’m taking a Creative Clothing class (again) with Lorraine Torrence, always a fun experience. The assignment was to recycle or reuse a garment or fabric into something new. I was interested in trying out Sandra Betzina’s new kimono pattern, Vogue1610, so I decided to use it for my project. The base fabric for the kimono was a denim curtain that I bought at the Stoughton St. Vincent store known for their amazing textile sale in the spring. I embellished it with various textiles I have collected along the way, Ikat runners from Art Gheko on Monroe Street and some hand-woven indigo hill tribe batik fabric from Ginger Blossom in Richmond Illinois.

I made this kimono as a 60th birthday gift for my amazing sister who can still stand on her head, among other things. Our equally amazing Mother passed away recently so I wanted to include a small embroidery detail from one of her favorite dresses in the front band.

My neighbor gifted me with an old kimono which I decided to turn into a vest. I backed the kimono fabric with flannel and then used white Sashiko thread to stitch the two together. The vest was lined with an old tablecloth. It’s a nice warm garment for our freezing Wisconsin temps!

I wanted to make a window covering for our staircase hallway. We are very close to our neighbors and I didn’t want to see their house through my window so I made this two part pojagi window covering. To complete the illusion I covered it with a lace curtain, otherwise it’s too obvious, at least to me, that it’s fabric. I used a lightweight shot cotton fabric which has a lovely transparency without being able to see through it. I used pojagi style stitching which finishes both sides (see photos) so that both sides are finished off.

I used indigo fabric scraps sewn onto the shoes to decorate them. Luckily I was able to stitch through the shoe fabric using both a straight and curved needle. I used Sashiko thread to stitch patterns on the top of the shoes and made shoestrings of the fabric.
My niece lives in Vermont and showed me some cute photos on Pinterest (where else) of pillows made in the shape of states. Since Vermont was where this romance began it seemed only fitting.

Her colors were grey and green/blue. I used several shades of silk dupioni and stitched squares together and then attached the whole piece to fusible fleece.
My trusty Bernina lettering stitches came in handy for adding the names of the bride and groom and date of the wedding. I also added a handle to the back for easy carrying (not shown in this photo). I stitched the 2 pieces together and then lightly stuffed the pillow with fiberfill to give it some body.
Comfort was her main objective and she found a cute pair of Dr. Scholl's that fit the bill. I got to do the decorating and it was great fun!

I just finished reading a wonderful biography by Betty Halbreich entitled "I'll Drink to That, A Life in Style with a Twist." Betty had an interesting life, growing up in Chicago and then moving to NYC when she got married. She was born into a wealthy family and married into an even wealthier one. Growing up around fashion gave her a wonderful insight into clothing and she kind of fell into her job as a personal shopper at Bergdorff-Goodman. She had lots of fun memories about growing up in Chicago; one of my favorites was her recollection of the Marshall Field's Special Sandwich served at the Walnut Room

In my stash I have many vintage labels which in themselves are works of art. I used the woven label above to make a pin, backed with a beautiful red & white obi piece and stuffed with fiberfill. The outside edge is beaded. I tried to find something on Millie with no luck. I thought she was a designer but it turns out she had a dress shop in Chicago in the 1950-60's. I was thrilled to come across the following info about her in Betty's book:

The only other place that rivaled Korshak's serene luxury was

Millie B. Oppenheimer. Tucked away in a small group of

rooms ustairs in the Ambassador East Hotel, there was nothing

more than a credenza and fresh flowers to connote a store.

Her clientele was as small as her shop. The epitome of low-key
graciousness, Miss Oppenheimer in her small hat and black clothing
had the most exquisite taste; taste I have never seen matched.
Beyond that, though, was her understanding of the women she
dressed. Miss Oppenheimer cared about everyone who shopped with her; she was a rarity in that she bought with great insight for each individual customer. (Some specialty stores still do this; that is the great thing about them. Unlike department stores that buy a popular dress in a range of sizes, owners of these small regional boutiques will take a model in a size with a regular customer in mind.)

For this project I used a Sandra Betzina blouse pattern, Vogue 7281, that I had made before. The fabric came from a pair of flowing pants I bought at Maxwell Street in Madison, intending to use the fabric in them for another garment. I was able to place the border of the print along the front edge of the blouse.
The buttons were made out of triangles of the fabric that had a layer of fleece inside and I sewed a layer of the facing fabric to the back. I rolled then up into little croissants and then hand stitched them to the fabric. I put a circle of heavy felt behind the button to hold it up and so that it wouldn't pull the lightweight fabric.
It features a grouping of Asian people and I have been pondering for years what to do with it. The assignment for our class prompted me to think of using it as I also had a few yards of another orange silk flowered print that worked with it - now to find 3 others! I had an orange corded silk in my stash that worked and after digging through my kimono pieces stash I found 2 more green shibori pieces that worked.

The pattern I chose had an Asian feel to it, as do so many of my garments - it was one of Lorraine Torrence's patterns, Grainline Gear Crossroads Jacket.

I remembered reading an article in one of Sandra Betzina's books about making a silk jacket. It involved backing each piece with a matching piece of flannelette that was fused with interfacing. The flannelette gave body to the fabric while the interfacing gave it abit more, without being directly fused onto the silk. I hand basted each piece (exhausting!!) with the 3 layers before sewing them together and then lined the piece in more of the orange silk.

Thee garment needed closures of some sort and I had purchased some buttons at a flea market in Madison that were just perfect - men's heads in a scale that matched the print to perfection. I used a covered snap as a closure underneath and then sewed the buttons onto the front band as decoration. So glad I waited for the perfect garment and the silk feels wonderful when I wear it!
(www.catspajamasproductions.net). It is held twice a year and is wonderful not only for the shopping but just for browsing and they usually put on some kind of clothing-related exhibit. If you go to the show on Friday nights and dress in vintage they will give you $2 off on your tickets.

A couple years ago I found 2 beautiful silk pillow cases. One I used as is on my bed and the other
I used for a project in Lorraine's class. Our assignment was to make a garment featuring panels so I took a favorite vest pattern and was able to cut up the pillow cover and use it for the front panels of the vest. For the back of the vest I used an embroidered piece on the upper back.

For this project I used a Paw Prints pattern by Dana
Bontrager called Kimono Jacket and Vest.

Since this is a rather boxy
vest, I decided to add about
4" in length to the pattern
and then added width to the
sides, below the armhole, in
a wedge shape to make more
of a swing shape to the vest.

I'd like to wear this vest both ways, so I added a snap so I can wear it closed and can also
let it hang open.
Here is a closeup of the stitching I did on the neckband
using #5 Pearl Cotton and Sashiko stitching. I got the
idea from an excellent article entitled Pocket Panache in the October/November 2013 Vogue Patterns Magazine.
Vogue Patterns magazine (one of my favorites along with Threads) has a monthly feature entitled What Are You Sewing? They ask their readers to send in a photo and explanation of a favorite project as an inspiration to other sewers. I decided to send them a photo of the coat I made from a Vogue pattern (#7663) by Marcy Tilton and it showed up in the April/May 2014 issue. You can read about my project below. And THANK YOU Vogue Patterns for awarding me a one-year subscription to your fabulous magazine!

The first assignment was to repurpose a piece of ready-to-wear. My project for this go around was a long, black silk Dana Buchman vest I found at a consignment store for $20. I decided to use some of the beautiful pieces of handprinted silk scraps that I had bought from Laura Goldstein, who has a business in Milwaukee called Grotta & Co. She makes the most fabulous scarves and pillows from her fabrics (www.grottaco.com).
I first fused the silk pieces onto some fusi-knit interfacing and then sewed the pieces into strips which I basted onto the hem of the vest. Then I used some black and white ribbon I got at Gayfeather Fabrics and topstitched it onto the top and bottom edges of the strip to finish it off.

For those of us sewists lucky enough to be located in Madison, WI, we now have a great wearable artist/quilter in our midst. Lorraine Torrence, formerly of Seattle, WA has relocated to Madison and is now teaching at Gayfeather Fabrics on Willy St. in Madison. I am enrolled in one of her classes entitled Creative Clothing and am keeping track of the projects I have made for this session.

Our first assignment was to repurpose a ready-to-wear garment. I chose this black Flax brand linen jacket that had been hanging in my closet for far too long. This jacket had many interesting design features which went unnoticed.

I chose to accent the lower pockets in the peplum with white linen fabric and added stacked buttons to the center front, alongside the front flange. I didn't care for the collar so I constructed a new neckpiece over the old one and accented the sleeves and center back with more of the white linen fabric.

One thing Lorraine impressed upon us was to always put something in the back of the garment that

relates to the front to pull the design together.

Our second assignment for Lorraine's class was threadwork. Since I knew I was going to be on the road for a few days I decided to do handwork on a vintage kimono that I had stenciled on in the past.
I used buttonhole thread and mother-of-pearl buttons to decorate the front bands of the kimono and accented a few other spots.
